Cingal Injection for Knee Pain in Singapore

Fast-acting relief and long-lasting results, in a single injection.

What Is Cingal?

Cingal is a combination viscosupplement that delivers both a corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid (HA) into the knee joint in a single injection. It is the only injection of its kind to combine these two components in one formulation, making it a distinctive treatment option for osteoarthritis of the knee.

The corticosteroid component, triamcinolone hexacetonide (18mg), targets inflammation quickly. The cross-linked sodium hyaluronate (88mg) then supplements the joint’s natural fluid, restoring lubrication and cushioning for sustained knee pain relief lasting up to six months.

How Cingal Works

Cingal’s dual-action formula addresses two aspects of knee OA simultaneously. The steroid reduces inflammation and joint pain rapidly, with many patients noticing relief within 48 hours. The hyaluronic acid (HA) component then continues to work over the following months, supporting the knee joint’s ability to absorb impact and move more comfortably.

Because Cingal is a single injection rather than a course of multiple visits, it is a practical and convenient treatment option for patients with busy lifestyles or those who prefer to minimise clinic visits.

Who Cingal Is Suitable For

Cingal may be recommended for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee who have not found sufficient relief from physical therapy or oral pain management. It is particularly well-suited for those who need both fast-acting and long-lasting relief from OA symptoms, including patients experiencing anterior knee pain, crepitus, or significant cartilage changes.

Cingal is a non-animal-based HA formulation, making it a suitable option for patients with avian protein allergies.

Cingal is one of several knee injection options at Hip & Knee Orthopaedics, and the right choice depends on your specific diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment goals. During your consultation, your doctor will review your imaging, assess the degree of osteoarthritis, and discuss all available treatment options with you, including whether Cingal or another injection type is the better fit.

If you have been managing knee pain with oral medication or physiotherapy without satisfactory results, or if you are looking to delay surgery, Cingal may be worth exploring. Patients who have previously had repeat injections of hyaluronic acid alone and are looking for faster initial relief may also find Cingal particularly suitable.

The Procedure

The Cingal injection is performed in clinic by our doctor under ultrasound guidance, achieving over 90% placement accuracy into the knee joint. This technique provides better comfort and results. A local anaesthetic is applied beforehand, and the injection itself takes only a few minutes. Where there is swelling present, aspiration (draining of excess fluid) can be performed at the same time.

Recovery and Side Effects

Some soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site for a few days after the procedure is normal. This can be managed with rest, ice, and paracetamol as needed. We recommend avoiding strenuous activity for one to two days after the injection.

Benefits of Cingal

• Immediate and long-term relief from a single injection

• Proven to deliver statistically significant pain reduction faster than hyaluronic acid alone

• Pain-free window supports better engagement with physiotherapy and rehabilitation

• Can be repeated every six months if symptoms recur
