TKR refers to the surgical procedure in which the damaged knee joint is replaced with implant. It is typically performed when the knee joint is severely damaged either by degenerative conditions such as Osteoarthritis, inflammatory joint conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis, or by severe injuries leading to Post-Traumatic Arthritis.
ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure that replaces the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament), one of the main ligaments in the knee, with a tissue graft, and is done via a keyhole or arthroscopic technique. An ACL reconstruction is done when an ACL tear or rupture occurs, usually in an active individual.
Meniscus Repair surgery is a keyhole or arthroscopic surgery done to repair meniscus tears. During the surgery, the meniscus tear is tidied up and then stitched back using small specialised darts. This helps to restore the meniscus function to allow it to continue acting as an effective shock absorber in your knee.
Our experienced surgeons will use a keyhole approach, to introduce an instrument known as the arthroscope, to look around the knee and assess the severity of the lesion. Next the cartilage ulcer will need to be cleaned up or debrided, to achieve stable margins/walls. After that, microfracture would be performed using specialised awls/picks.
Dr Lau and Dr Tan regularly write about their experiences in the field as leading hip and knee specialists in Singapore
